Computer forensics is a relatively new but booming field and includes the investigative action of finding legal evidence on a computer in cases like fraud, computer crimes, or theft or destruction of intellectual property or trade secrets.
To start working in this exciting career, you need adequate computer forensics training to become an expert in recovering encrypted, deleted or corrupt computer files. You will do your tasks in order to provide evidence to testify in a criminal case or to transfer digital information in a format suitable to be used in a criminal investigation. You will need to first go to college to get an associate's degree in 2 years or a bachelor's degree in 4 years in computer forensics or an associated field, like criminal justice, engineering or computer science. You can do this at a community college, university or even online.
You can then choose to get extra computer forensic training by either taking it as a minor to your degree or getting additional certificates at computer forensics school after you graduate.
Each certificate you get will open a new door for you and may be required depending on where you choose to work. There are different certificates you can attain, with the Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) being the most popular.
Others include the Certified Computer Examiner exam (CCE) or the Advanced Information Security (AIS) Certification, amongst others. In your course, you will learn technical skills like working with software drivers, file formatting, cryptology, reverse software engineering and analytical skills like investigative techniques.
Career Outlook
This may be a new field, but with all the business being done online and with technology taking over the corporate world, this field is in high demand for trained experts. Most of the jobs will be offered in law enforcement agencies or corporations, but you can also freelance or work for a consulting firm if you have your master's degree.
It is a very lucrative position, paying between $50,000-$100,000 a year depending on the levels of your education and experience. It also depends which and how many certifications you have.
